Transcendental Meditation and the TM- Sidhi programs including Yogic Flying are unique in the history of conflict resolution both in theory and effectiveness. The theory is that international conflicts , terrorism and crime are consequences of stress in collective consciousness (the holistic level of society that rises from and defines the quality of life in the population). The solution is simple. A group of Yogic Flyers, through their daily practice of Transcendental Meditation and the TM-Sidhi program, produce coherence in collective consciousness and dissolve collective stress -- thereby neutralizing the basis of all conflict and violence. The solution seems too simple yet the effectiveness has been demonstrated successfully in over 50 scientific studies without exception. The results suggest that long term implementation of the groups will have a major impact on terrorism and international conflict worldwide.

The basis of terrorism can be understood in this: Whatever may seem to be the cause of the outbursts of terrorism, whatever little excuses there are, these excuses arise on the surface of the human race only from the stress in world consciousness, and stress is not seen until it bursts out.

I don't see any solution to terrorism except creating coherence in world consciousness. No power of the sword can possibly eliminate terrorism. Many governments are involved in promoting terrorism, but there is no direct political, economic, or social measure to stop terrorism in the world except to educate the people to think and act according to natural law and be creating coherence in world consciousness.

Some Published Research on the Effects of the Group Practice of the TM-Sidhi Program Including Yogic Flying on Conflict Resolution

International Peace Project in the Middle East - This prospective social experiment tests a new theory and technology for alleviating violent conflict through reducing societal stress in an underlying field of "collective consciousness." It was predicted that group practice of the Maharishi Technology of the Unified Field (the Transcendental meditation and TM-Sidhi programs) during August and September, 1983, in Jerusalem, would reduce stress in the collective consciousness and behavior of Israel and Lebanon. Box-Jenkins ARIMA impact assessment, cross-correlation, and transfer function analyses were used to study the effects of changes in the size of the group on several variables and composite indices reflecting (a) the quality of life in Jerusalem (automobile accidents, fires, and crime), (b) the quality of life in Israel (crime, stock market, and national mood, derived from news content analysis), and (c) the war in Lebanon (war deaths of all factions and war intensity, derived from new content analysis). Increases in the size of the group had a statistically significant effect in the predicted direction on the individual variables and on all composite quality-of -life indices. The effects of holidays, temperature, weekends and other forms of seasonality were explicitly controlled and could not account for these results. Cross-correlations and transfer functions indicated that the group had a leading relationship to change on the quality-of-life indicators, supporting a causal interpretation. Auto accidents, fires, crimes, and war deaths (decreased 75% at largest point of group) showed a significant decrease as the numbers of the group increased.

Reduced Crime in Merseyside, England Including the City of Liverpool - Time series analysis was used to test the hypothesis that Merseyside crime rate was reduced by a group practicing Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programs. Previous research suggests that a phase transition to increased orderliness as evidenced by reduced crime rate should occur when the group size approaches the square root of 1% of the total population. Analysis of Merseyside monthly crime data and coherence group size from 1978 to 1991 shows that a phase transition occurred during March 1988 with a 13.4% drop in crime when the group size first exceeded the square root of 1% or the Maharishi Effect threshold (p<o.oooo6). Up to 1992, Merseyside crime rate has remained steady in contrast to the national crime rate which has increased by 45%. In 1987 Merseyside had the third highest crime rate of the eleven largest metropolitan areas in England and Wales; by 1992 it had the lowest crime rate, 40% below levels predicted. There were 255,000 less crimes in Merseyside from 1988 to 1992 than would have been expected had Merseyside continued to follow the national crime trend. Home Office figures indicate savings to Merseyside could exceed L1250 million for the five year period. Demographic changes, economic variables, police practice, and other factors could not account for the changes.

Reduced Violent Crime in Washington

A National Demonstration Project conducted in Washington, D.C., from June 7 - July 30, 1993, tested the efficacy of a coherence-creating group for reducing crime and social stress and improving the effectiveness of government. In this carefully controlled experiment, the group increased from 800 to 4,000 Yogic Flyers over the two-month period. Although violent crime had been steadily increasing during the first five months of the year, soon after the start of the study, violent crime (measured by FBI Uniform Crime Statistics) began decreasing (in comparison to projected figures) and continued to drop until the end of the experiment (maximum decrease 23.6% p<.0001), after which it began to rise again. The effects of the group could not be attributed to other possible causes, including temperature, precipitation, weekends, and police and community anticrime activities

Research Evaluations

"I think that the claim can be plausibly made that the potential impact of this research exceeds that of any other ongoing social or psychological research program. The research has survived a broader array of statistical tests than has most research in the field of conflict resolution. I think this work, and the theory that informs it, deserve the most serious consideration by academics and policy-makers alike."

David Edwards, P. H. D., Professor of Government, University of Texas, Austin

"What we are looking at here is a new paradigm of viewing crime and violence....I would like to recommend that this new model that is being offered here, after a number of exhaustive and very carefully controlled studies, be considered and that we think about ways that it might be implemented in the inner city with youth and community people who live there."

Ann Hughes, Ph.D. and Professor of Sociology and Government at the University of the District of Columbia, at a press conference in Washington D.C.

Theories Regarding Yogic Flying and Peace

Stress in each individual's physiology can be dissolved through the practice of Transcendental Meditation and the TM-Sidhi programs, including Yogic Flying. Stress in the collective consciousness of society is created by stress and tension within the individuals of that society. Tension and disharmony can be reduced in the collective consciousness if the individuals in the society create more orderliness and coherence within their own individual physiologies. When a large group of individuals create this orderliness in their physiologies simultaneously, then the effect is multiplied.

Reciprocal Influence: The influence of each individual is important in creating a peaceful and harmonious society. Maharishi (1977) explains that there is a reciprocal relationship between individual consciousness and collective consciousness. That is, each individual influences the collective consciousness, and therefore the collective consciousness of a nation or the world can only be improved through improving individual consciousness.*

The Global Maharishi Effect. Maharishi's theory of collective consciousness predicts that it is possible to directly create an influence of coherence in any level of society, including the world as a whole. Maharishi's great discovery, which makes it possible to transform the trends of life in society in a practical, rapid, and effective way, is that only a small percentage of the population identifying their awareness with the unified field is sufficient to create an influence of coherence in collective consciousness.

A large body of scientific research has repeatedly confirmed the hypothesis that as little as 1% of a population practicing the Transcendental Meditation program or an even smaller number on the order of the square root of 1% of a population collectively practicing the TM-Sidhi program is sufficient to produce a measurable and holistic influence of harmony and integration in the entire population.*

The Maharishi Effect Corresponds

to Research in Physics

The theory of the Maharishi Effect corresponds to widely accepted theories in physics: the Unified Field Theory and the recent Nobel prize winning theory on the rubidium atom.

Unified Field Theory: The Unified Field theories confirm that at subtler levels of nature's activity, the laws of nature are present in a simpler, more unified structure in which diverse laws of nature become unified.

Since the discovery of this theory, extensive scientific research along with the direct personal experience of many individuals practicing the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programs, including Yogic Flying, has shown that human intelligence, like Nature's intelligence, has at its basis a unified field of intelligence. The subjective characteristics of the unified field of consciousness are identical to the characteristics of the unified field of modern physics (self-referral or self-interaction, pure intelligence, and infinite dynamism), indicating that they are the same unified field. This is why Yogic Flying works. The individual is able to experience the deepest level of Nature's functioning and have a global effect on the environment.

Experiment on the Rubidium Atom -- An Example from Nature 0f How a Single Individual Can Have a Powerful, Beneficial Influence on the Whole World: We ordinarily think of the atom as a particle. However, to explain the subtle properties of matter, it is necessary to think of an atom as a wave, and represent it by a wave function. When a rubidium atom is slowed down, its wave function expands. When the temperature in rubidium gas is reduced, the wave functions of all the atoms in the gas expand to incorporate the whole of the gas; all the wave functions become identical. This puts the gas into a state of macroscopic quantum coherence, a state in which each atom is intimately linked to the gas as a whole.

Like this, during the collective practice of Transcendental Meditation and the TM-Sidhi programs including Yogic Flying, individual consciousness expands to cosmic consciousness, creating an unbounded wave of peace.
